Charles Clifford "Charlie" Long, age 82, Carl Junction, passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at Freeman West.
Charlie was born December 14, 1936 at Twin Grove, Missouri, son of the late Harold Long and Dortha Richey Long. He graduated from Carl Junction High School, and worked as a farmer, salesman, and referee for many years. He served his country in the United States Marine Corp, and was a longtime member of the American Legion Post 781 where he served as a past Post Commander. He began his career as an official in 1956. He has officiated all sports, and was at one time the secretary-treasurer of the local association of officials. He worked countless games in High School Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Softball. Many local coaches had good things to say about Charlie, which speaks to his character and integrity as both an official, and as a person.
In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Jane Long, who passed away December 1, 2012.
Survivors include his children, Randy Long, Sonya Huff (Shaun) of Joplin; stepchildren, Mike Moudy (Cindy) of Carl Junction, Debra Burgess (Robin) of Carl Junction; grandchildren, Chris Moudy, April Underwood (Jason), Adam Ogle, Kristen Mishmash (Kyle), Brittany Kropp (Austin), Vanessa Huff, and Drew Atherton (Angie); 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Steve Long (Betty) of Carl Junction; several nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be Friday, July 12, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in the Jerry B. Stark Performing Arts Center at the Carl Junction Intermediate School, with Rev. Bob Simon, and his brother, Steve Long, officiating.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Charlie Long Memorial Fund, care of Parker Mortuary.
