Emma Jean Schroeder

(From Parker Mortuary)

Emma Jean Schroeder, age 91, Joplin, passed away at 1:19 p.m. Friday, January 3, 2019 at Joplin Gardens.

Emma Jean was born July 10, 1928 in Columbus, Kansas to the late Kenneth O. Harper and Ethel R. Akers Harper.

Emma Jean was a retired RN and a member of Peace Lutheran Church ELCA, Joplin, Missouri. Emma Jean graduated from Cherokee County Community High School in 1946 and attended nurses training at St. Joseph Hospital in Wichita, Kansas receiving her RN in 1950.

From 1959 until 1966, Emma Jean and her husband, who worked the Boeing Company, moved eleven times across the United States and Canada, allowing them to see new things and meet many wonderful people.

Emma Jean worked as a night nurse for twenty-five years at Overlake Medical Center, Bellevue, Washington, retiring in 1991. She loved nursing and caring for people and shared lifelong friendships with her ‘Golden Oldies’ nurses group. Emma Jean was a people person and was known for her beautiful smile and caring nature. She was a typical baseball and football ‘mom’ during the kids’ high school and college years, joined bowling leagues, salmon fished, and never turned down a pinochle game.

After moving to Joplin, Emma Jean was active in church altar guild, choir, fellowship, and volunteered at Crosslines. She was also a breast cancer survivor.

Emma Jean also enjoyed the little things in life. Whether it was working in the yard or baking in the kitchen, she always seemed to go about her way with a positive spirit. She loved to sing and would always hum along even if she did not know the words. One of the things that Emma Jean was known for was her 'I'm fine' attitude toward anything that she faced. She loved her family with all her heart and will be missed by everyone that knew her.

Emma Jean married Eugene D. Schroeder on September 22, 1950. He preceded her in death on May 14, 1980.
