Bessie Hampton

Bessie M. Hampton, age 92, Joplin, passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at Silver Creek Assisted Living.

Bessie was born May 23, 1927 in Sugar Creek, Missouri, daughter of the late Sterling L. Watkins and Freeda Briggs Watkins. She attended early school in Hart, Missouri, and graduated from Anderson High School in 1945, where she was a member of the Glee Club, and was assistant art editor of the Redbird Annual. She worked for years as a secretary with Vickers, Inc. in Joplin, and was of the Methodist Faith.

She married James Henry Hampton on January 4, 1946, in Columbus, Kansas. He preceded her in death on July 25, 1989.










In addition to her parents, Bessie was also preceded in death by her sisters Doris Soderstadt and Patty Downs, and sister-in-law Opal Metz.

Bessie is survived by brother-in-law, Delmar Hampton and wife, Jean, of Neosho, Missouri and brother-in-law, Everett Downs of Holt, Missouri; as well as several nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.

Funeral service will be Thursday, January 30, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Interment will be at Osborn Memorial Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Silver Creek Assisted Living, the Compassus Hospice staff, and the staff at College View Manor Independent Living for all of the love, help, and kindness that they bestowed on Bessie.

Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
