Lillis Gilbert

Lillis Beth (McProud) Gilbert, 96, of Pittsburg, KS, passed away at 4:00 PM, Thursday, January 16, 2020, at Girard Medical Center, at Girard, KS.

She was born on September 5, 1923, at South Haven, Kansas, to O.M. “Tobe” and Ruby (Bonsall) McProud. She attended school in South Haven and Wellington before earning her teacher’s certification from Kansas State Teachers College (now Pittsburg State University). She taught in a one room school house in Sumner County, Kansas.

On June 16, 1946, she was united in marriage to Clyde E Gilbert at South Haven, Kansas. They owned Gilbert’s Camping Center in Girard, Kansas. He preceded her in death on October 16, 1988.

Lillis worked for 15 years as a hostess at Mt. Carmel Medical Center in Pittsburg.

She was the matriarch of the Gilbert family and cared for grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known to her family as “Cookin” Grandma."








She is survived by a two daughters, Marlaine Nickelson and her husband Bill of Mulberry, Kansas and Diane Ludwig of Toronto, Kansas; two sons, Michael Gilbert and his wife Shannon of Des Moines, Iowa and James Gilbert and his wife, Lisa of Eudora, Kansas; her grandchildren, Sean and Cindy Nickelson of Pratt, KS, Danny and Marietta Nickelson of Girard, KS, Bill and Summer Ludwig of Albuquerque, NM, Dusti Fansler of Ponca City, OK, Matt and Alli Ludwig of Derby, KS, Katy and Josh DeHoux of Toronto, KS, Bethany Ward of Joplin, MO, Mallory Gilbert of Lawrence, KS and Loralei Gilbert of Ottawa, KS; sixteen great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clyde, two brothers, James and Donald McProud, her sister, Helen, son-in-law, William Ludwig, and granddaughter, Michelle “Mickie” (Nickelson) Moback.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, January 20, 2020, at the Brenner Mortuary with Pastor K.O. Noonoo officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Olive Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be given to the Wounded Warriors. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 East 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762.
