Sana Stevens Shagets passed away January 5, 2020, after a long battle with Alzheimers. Throughout her battle she remained loving and kind, a true example of courage to those close to her.
Sana was born in Joplin, Missouri, on October 16, 1953, to Marianna and Brady Stevens. Raised all her life in Joplin, she had a sister, Courtney Dermott, who preceded her in death, and a brother, Giltner Stevens, who survives.
Sana attended Columbia Elementary, North Junior High School and Memorial High School. After graduating from Memorial, she attended the University of Missouri, where she became a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. The next year she transferred to Colorado School for Women to be close to the love of her life, Frank Shagets, who attended the Air Force Academy.
In 1973, she and Frank were married and continued their education together in St. Louis. She graduated cum laud from University of Missouri St. Louis with a BA in education.
They then moved to San Antonio, where three children were born: William Brady Shagets, Luke Cameron Shagets and Carey LeGates Shagets. Her family was her world. In San Antonio she made lifelong friends and as a group they called themselves "Heartstrings." She also trained for and ran a marathon which led to a lifelong devotion to running.
Upon returning to Joplin in 1987, Sana became a member of PEO Chapter FI. She was a Friend of St. Avips and chaired the St. Avip's Ball where she implemented the first art auction to a huge success. One of her passions became horses, a passion which she shared with her daughter, Carey. Sana went to the AQHA World Show and competed in several events on her beloved Mission Incredible. Introduced to the world of fox hunting, she relished the pageantry and thrill of the sport. Sana was awarded colors by several hunts. The friendships she forged with fellow fox hunters endure.
Sana is survived by her loving husband of 48 years and her three children and their spouses: William and Ashley Shagets, Luke and Kristy Shagets, Carey and Todd Moen and three grandchildren, Elaine and Pierce Moen and Cameron Shagets. She is also survived by her brother, Gil and wife, Susan, a host of nieces and nephews who loved her dearly, her sister-in-law and cousin, Susan and Steve Satterlee, and brother-in-law, Jon Dermott.
A special thank you to Becky Taylor for her unwavering care over the past several years.
Arrangements are under the care of Parker Mortuary. A small private service is planned at St. Philip's Episcopal Church with burial to follow.
