David Esch

David Lee Esch, 84, of Joplin, Missouri, passed away Thursday, August 26, 2021, surrounded by loved ones at The Wildwood Senior Living community in Joplin, Missouri.

David was born July 24, 1937 in Pittsburg, Kansas. He was the son of Peter Antone and Hattie Leota Esch. David attended both St. Mary’s Grade School and St. Mary’s High School in Pittsburg. While attending St. Mary’s High School, David participated in basketball and football, received multiple athletic awards, and was part of the 1955 graduating class. David went on to attend Pittsburg State University.








While studying at Pittsburg State, David met his wife, Masolyne Owens of Nevada, Missouri, at a dance, which Mt. Caramel Nursing students were invited to attend. David and Masolyne were married on February 7, 1959 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nevada. David and Masolyne had five children.

David served for the Army National Guard for four years. After he and Masolyne married, they moved to Kansas City, where he worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance. When his father became ill, David and Masolyne moved back to Pittsburg, KS to help run the family business - Esch Lumber Company. David then worked in management for Prudential Life Insurance Company for over 25 years.

David was devoted to his wife and children. He enjoyed vacationing with his family, spending time at the lake, fishing, and golfing. He was an avid fan of both the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Chiefs. David is remembered for his strong will, big heart, sense of humor, and his love for storytelling. David lived to make others smile and laugh.

David is survived by his wife, Masolyne; sons David L. Esch, Jr. of St Louis, MO, Brian and wife Marla Esch of Bentonville, AR, Mark Esch of Webb City, MO; and daughter Tammie and husband Chris Vlach of Bonner Springs, KS; grandchildren; Anthony Esch, Margaret Esch-Anglin, Spencer Esch, Sydney Esch-Fondren, Clayton Vlach, Sawyer Esch, Elizabeth Esch, Andrew Esch, Jordyn Vlach, Kaitlyn Esch, Colton Vlach, and Quinton Vlach, and five great grandchildren; brother Pete and wife Shirley Esch of Fayetteville, AR.

David was preceded in death by his parents; son ,Steven Alan Esch; brother, Dr. John Gerald Esch; sister, Mary Del Esch Sparks, and granddaughter Melissa Esch.

The family will receive friends following the graveside services at a luncheon at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church.
