(From Parker Mortuary)Joseph Edward Clayton, age 58, of Joplin, passed away on August 22, 2021 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, due to unexpected complications from bypass surgery.
Joseph, son of Bruce and Minnie (Quick) Clayton, was born on October 20, 1962 in St. Louis, MO.
During Joseph’s high school years, he enrolled in a vocational drafting class and became interested in land surveying. Soon after graduating high school, he enlisted into the United States Army.
During his time serving his country, he became a Field Artillery Surveyor specializing in high-accuracy surveying for the targeting of tactical missile systems in cold war Germany.
After returning from the military, he became a highly respected land surveyor working for MODOT, Missouri Department of Conservation, and currently a surveyor with Anderson Engineering.
He was named the youngest survey party chief in the history of MODOT and was awarded Surveyor of the Year in 2017 by the Missouri Society of Professional Surveyors. He had crossed every creek and hill on the I-49 corridor, surveying from Joplin to the Arkansas state line. One of his proudest achievements was re-locating old survey markers from along the Osage Treaty line in Missouri and Arkansas.
On October 10, 2020 he was united in marriage to his loving wife, Sheila Morrow, in Eureka Springs, AR. She survives.
Joseph held many achievements over his career but his number one achievement was his family. He loved his wife, parents, children and grandchildren. He loved fishing with his dad and being a momma’s boy. He was a proud father but an even prouder grandfather. He was an avid coin collector, enjoyed cooking and sampling of port wines from vineyards in Missouri and a fan of German cuisine, a holdover from his days in the Army.
Survivors include his wife, Sheila Clayton, of Joplin; his parents, Bruce and Minnie Clayton, of Joplin; two sons, Zebulin Clayton, and his wife, Samiah Alsharif, of Webb City, and Kai Clayton, of Joplin; four grandchildren, whom he deeply worshiped, Violette, Fauna, Mariah, and Ezra; four step-children, Chasson, Blythe, Emiko, and Natasha Dunn; and many relatives and a large host of friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at 10:00 AM at Parker Mortuary in Joplin with burial to follow at the Webb City Cemetery in Webb City. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Friday, August 27th from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Parker Mortuary.
Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin.
