Hazel Dunham

Hazel Herring Dunham, age 92 of Joplin, passed away on Monday, August 23, 2021 at her home with family at her side.

Hazel was born June 21, 1929 in Diamond, Missouri, daughter of the late Theodore Herring and Hattie (Frenzel) Herring. She graduated from Neosho High School and then received her nursing degree from St. John’s School of Nursing in 1950. 









 
She met George T. Dunham during her clinical rotations and they married on September 17, 1950. They had four children and she was heavily involved in scouting programs while they were young. Because of her love of learning she returned to school and earned a bachelor’s degree from Missouri Southern State College in Sociology in 1978. She returned to nursing for a time after her children were grown and was also involved in several volunteer organizations, including the St. John’s Hospice program and Crisis Intervention. Hazel was a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Joplin.



In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, George, a son Theodore Adams Dunham and a great granddaughter Olivia Grace Key.



Survivors include her sons, George Marshall Dunham (Barbara) of Soldotna, Alaska and John Dunham of Phoenix, Arizona, daughter Margaret Yocum (Don) of Joplin; five grandchildren, Philip Yocum (Amy) of Joplin, Kelly Key (Brian) of Kansas City, Malarie McFerran (Allen) of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Jessica Keck (John) of Pittsburg, Kansas and George Robert Dunham (Deborah) of Shalimar, Florida; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.



Graveside services will be Monday, August 30, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in Mount Hope Cemetery with Pastor Gregory Mech officiating and family serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Sunday from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.
