May Freelend

Mrs. Lillie “May” Freelend, 92, of Sarcoxie, Missouri, passed away on Monday, August 23, 2021 at Freeman West Hospital, in Joplin, after a sudden illness.

May entered this life on November 3, 1928, in Wichita, Kansas, to the union of the late Franklin Pierce and Retta Elvina (Reed) Martin. She and her family moved to Montreal, Missouri in 1930 for two years and later moved to Arkansas on some homestead land until 1938.








Later she relocated to Joplin and began her career with Southwestern Bell Telephone, retiring August 2, 1986 after thirty-four years of dedicated service. On July 26, 1986 she was united in marriage to Eldon Freelend, together they shared thirty-five years until her passing. She was an eighty year member of Free Methodist Church, serving in many capacities, treasurer, church board, Sunday school teacher, lead Bible study, and conference nominating and finance committee. She enjoyed sewing, macrame, craft items, crocheting and cooking. She was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and will truly be missed by those who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Paul Freelend; grandson, Zachery Freelend; siblings, Louis Martin, Frank Martin, Edward Martin, Arinda Gary, Nora Bess Jordan, Ann Aldridge and Ella Letha Sitler; and son-in-law, Rodney Haines.

May is survived by her husband, Eldon Freelend; children, Raymond Freelend and wife, Cindy, of Sarcoxie, Judith Haines, of Carthage, Vivian Welters and her husband, Jerome, of Monett, Allen Freelend and his wife, Ronda, of Carthage, and Vernon Freelend, of Joplin; eleven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Freelend; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Freelend are 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 27, 2021 at Meadowridge Ministries, in Joplin, with Pastor Clifford Henry officiating. Interment will follow at Wild Rose Cemetery in Webb City. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are Raymond Freelend, Allen Freelend, Vernon Freelend, Jerome Welters, Christopher Haines and Nathan Freelend. Honorary pallbearers are Jacob Freelend, Isaac Freelend, Nicholas Freelend, Michael Haines, Blake Ellis and Jordon McRoberts.
