Letta Orene Surber

Letta means “joy” Orene means “nurturing woman”

Letta Orene Mounce was born to Charles Henry Mounce and Atha Stella Hooten-Mounce on November 13, 1930. 

She married James Edwin Surber August 24, 1947 in Delaware Co., Oklahoma. Two children were born to this Union: Janet Elaine Surber and James Russell Surber. She was known as Orene most of her life. 

 

She suffered a stroke in 2015 and she became Letta when she moved into the Nursing Home. Letta Orene passed away, in her sleep, at the McDonald Living Center, Anderson, MO on Friday, April 15, 2022.

Letta Orene Surber was preceded by her husband, James Edwin Surber, their daughter, Janet Elaine Surber (1948-1948); two sisters, Rachel Pauline Mounce and Bertha Maxine Mounce-Fortner. Also, her grandson, Jason Russell Surber and her daughter-in-law, Debra Lynn Bratton-Surber. She is survived by her son, James (Jim) Russell Surber of Southwest City, MO, her brother-in-law, Earl Fortner and his son, Ray Fortner of Joplin, MO.

Letta Orene Surber was born in Noel, MO and lived in the Southwest City, McDonald Co., MO area the most of her life. She and her husband James lived on a farm South of Southwest City, MO. The property was in Delaware County just over the Oklahoma line. She was a Homemaker. They moved into the town of Southwest City, MO in 1983. Their son Jim, now lives on the Farm property.

As a young woman she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior. She was active and faithfully attended The First Baptist Church in Southwest City, MO. Letta Orene was a writer of Poetry all her life. She would share poems with friends and she would share them sometimes with the Church at the Monthly Singings. At the ending of her life, she wrote a short story entitled “The Big Loving Family in the Big House”. She left her poems and story to the First Baptist Church Library. She was loved by those who knew her. Her son Jim and her grandson, Jason were the joy of her life.

Funeral service for Letta Orene will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at the First Baptist Church in Southwest City, Missouri. Pastor Rob Grimm will officiate. Burial will follow the service in the Southwest City Cemetery in Southwest City, Missouri. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to service time on Thursday, at the Church.
