Perry Fleming

Perry S. Fleming, age 71, Joplin, MO passed away on Sunday, April 10, 2022 at his residence with his wife, Kim Kissel Fleming, and step-daughter and stepson-in-law, Katie and Phillip Rogers, by his side.

Perry was born August 31, 1950 in Council Bluffs, IA, son of the late Leo and Wilma (Hays) Fleming. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in his hometown in 1968. 

During the 1970s he served in the Army while stationed in Ethiopia earning a National Defense Service Medal and played on the Army Soccer team. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Missouri Southern State University. 








He was a prolific artist; a dedicated painter, sculpture, and potter, teaching at Phoenix Fired Art in Joplin, MO and serving, for a time, as the Art Director at The Keyes Gallery in Springfield, MO. Perry was an insightful and thoughtful conversationalist, who reveled in nature, playing chess, and enjoyed dancing with his wife Kim. He celebrated life through his love of poetry, cooking, and travelling. Perry and his wife Kim (Kissel) were true partners with Kim caring for him during his illness in his last years.

He loved deeply and was loved by many. In addition to his parents, Perry was preceded in death by his brother Ted Fleming and sister Joann Blocker. 

Perry is survived by brother Leo, Fleming, Jr. and wife Norma, Council Bluffs, IA; son Clinton Fleming, Carthage, MO, daughter and son-in-law Sonia Fetch and husband Wes, Port Angeles, WA; stepchildren Katie Rogers and husband Phillip, Joplin, MO, and Carter Leffen and wife Katie, New York, NY; granddaughter Olivia Fleming, Webb City, MO, Joplin, MO; several nieces and nephews and numerous loving friends, including lifelong friends Pat Lantari, Marion, IA and Byron Jones, Prairie Village, KS.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary. A private memorial service and celebration of life will be held with inurnment at Mt Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks that any memorials or gifts be in the form of donation to “Paralyzed Veterans of America” (https://secure.pva.org) and/or “Kansas City Veterans Association” (https://veteranshomecare.com ).
