(From Knell Mortuary)Hershel Frank Meister, 86, a man of adventurous spirit and courageous heart, passed away on December 31, 2023, at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, Missouri. He was born on June 15, 1937, in LaRussell, Missouri, the son of the late Edward Meister and Avalee (Uber) Mesiter. Hershel's journey was one marked by passion, dedication, and an enduring love for his family and country.
Hershel's early life was rooted in Carthage, Missouri, where he completed his education, graduating from Carthage High School in 1956. His academic achievements were a prelude to a life of service and commitment.
Hershel answered the call of duty and became a proud veteran of the United States Air Force. His twenty-two years of service were a testament to his unwavering patriotism and love for his country.
After his honorable discharge, Hershel continued his career in security, first at Los Alamos in New Mexico, and later at Sandia National Laboratories. His work in police security was characterized by the same integrity and diligence that had defined his military service. Hershel's colleagues remember him as a man who could always be relied upon, a man whose word was his bond.
Hershel's life beyond his professional commitments was rich and full. He was a familiar face at local car shows, where he indulged his love for collectible cars. His eyes would light up at the sight of a well-maintained classic, and he could often be found engaged in animated discussions with fellow enthusiasts. Hershel's adventurous nature was also evident in his passion for auctions. The thrill of the bid and the chance to add to his eclectic collection of treasures brought him immense joy. Hershel was also a man of faith, attending the First United Methodist Church in Carthage.

Hershel's legacy is carried forward by his loving family. He is survived by his son, Frank Meister (wife Judy), Pittsburg, Kansas; three sisters, Carolyn Rimmer (husband Glen), Salina, Kansas, Anna Culver (husband James), Jasper, Arkansas, and Clara Ward of Carthage, Missouri; his four grandchildren, Stephanie McConnell, Kayla Meister, Oden Davis, and Jeremiah Davis; three great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends also mourn the loss of this remarkable man.
