Jim Hornbeak

James W. “Jim” Hornbeak, age 87, of Joplin, Mo. passed away at 6:14 p.m. Monday, August 8, 2016 at Freeman Hospital West following a lengthy illness. Jim was born August 21, 1928 in Springfield, Mo to Fred and Effie Hornbeak and had lived in Joplin since 1963. Jim was employed with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., later AT&T for 36 years, retiring in 1989. Jim was a charter member of Christ’s Community United Methodist Church, and served on most committees, taught Sunday School and was a member in the choir, a member of the Essex Mo. Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Joplin, the Telephone Pioneers, and several Joplin bowling leagues. He served his country in the U. S. Army during both WW II. and the Korean Conflict. Jim was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, and enjoyed camping and fishing.

Jim married Doris Thurman August 27, 1954 in Portageville, Mo. and she survives. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Vienda Raney, and a sister, Pat Perkins. Additional survivors include a brother, Fred “Bud” Hornbeak and wife Marcia, Rockford, Il., one sister, Virginia McAdams, Columbus, Ms., two grandsons, Eric Raney and wife Tina, and Jeremy Raney and wife Brandy, and five great grandchildren, Abigayle Collins and husband Ben, James Raney, Jesseca Raney, Andrew Raney, and Lauren Raney.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Christ’s Community United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Dart, Rev. Chris Sloan, and Rev. Max Raney officiating. Burial will follow at the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. Thursday at the Mason-Woodard Chapel. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary of Joplin, Mo.
