Mary Louise Gilbert, age 73, passed away at 8:10 am, Sunday, August 21, 2016 at Galena Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an illness.
Mary was born November 12, 1942 in Galena, KS. Her parents were Charles “Bud” and Fern (Lammers) Sweet. She was a lifetime resident of Galena.
She graduated from Galena High School with the Class of 1962. For 14 years, she was a teacher/counselor at Galena Head Start. She later worked as a custodian with the Galena Schools. She was also babysitter nurturing several children from the Galena area over the years.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Galena, KS. She enjoyed walking, quilting, and working with other craft projects. But her favorite pastime was watching her grandchildren’s activities.
Mary was married to Robert Lee Gilbert on May 23, 1963 in Galena, KS. He passed away March 3, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Judy Stapleton.
Surviving is one son Mike Gilbert; two daughters, Susan New (husband, Marty), and Stacy Barker (husband, J.D.) all of Galena,; two brothers, Charlie (wife, Betty) Sweet, and Kenny Sweet, all of Galena; one sister, Phyllis (husband, Ernie) Brown, Webb City, MO; 7 grandchildren, Karessa (husband, Ryan) Cannon, Kelsey (husband, Coltyn) Seifert, Katie New, Shantel Barker, Colton Barker, Chance Gilbert, and Mika Gilbert; and two great-grandchildren, Kyan and Keely Cannon.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at First Baptist Church, Galena, KS. Pastor Jeff Swart and Pastor Dave Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena, KS.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 pm, Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, Galena, KS in care of the funeral home.
