Steve Leibbrand

Stephen “Steve” Burton Leibbrand, 68, Carthage, MO died Saturday, August 13, 2016 at Ft. Knox Army Base, KY.

He was born March 18, 1948, in Walla Walla, Washington to Burton Leibbrand and Esther Louise (Crutcher) Leibbrand. He attended grade school in Oronogo, MO and graduated from Webb City High School, Webb City, MO. He obtained a BS in Business Education, Economics, and Marketing from Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, KS.

Steve served active duty in the US Army in Korea from 1969-1971. He then was a member of the US Army Reserves from 1971-1975. He continued his military career servicing in the Missouri Army National Guard from 1982-1992. He currently was the Logistics Supply Officer for the Army ROTC program at Pittsburg State University since 2005. He was scheduled to retire from this position September 2016. He often said that his time in the military taught him about leadership, accountability, responsibility, and discipline.

His previous business career included Purchasing Manager for US Gypsum in Lamar, MO; Credit Manager for Steadley Company, Carthage, MO; Owner of Cars Day Off, LLC, Carthage, MO.

Steve was a 3rd term City Councilman in Carthage. He also was a member of Carthage Rotary, Carthage Chamber of Commerce, Life Member Carthage Post 2590 VFW, Member Carthage Post 9 American Legion, Masonic Lodge #586, Alba, MO.

Some of Steve’s other civic and community responsibilities include as such: Steve was an alumni of Leadership Carthage; served in leadership positions at Carthage Community Clinic, Fair Acres Family Y, Innovative Industries, Carthage Literacy Center and the seven county Workforce Investment Board. He also served on the Civil War Museum Board, Carthage Multicultural Committee, and Carthage Caring Communities. Steve also served on many council committees including: Budget, Public Services, Public Safety, and Public Works. He was Council liaison to Mercy McCune Brooks Hospital, Carthage Public Library, and Kellogg Lake Board.

Steve is survived by his loving mate of 18 years, Lynda Homa, whom he often referred to as his “Home Commander”!; two sons, Geoff Leibbrand, Carl Junction, MO, and Jeremy (wife Cynthia) Leibbrand, Neosho, MO; one daughter Angela (husband Jeff) Sell, Lee Summit, MO; stepchildren Josh (wife Chelsea) Baugh, Carthage, MO, and Debbie (husband Jonathan) Vieira, Nashville, TN; grandchildren Brett Vaughan, Race Vaughan, Carssyn Beerly, Chloe Beerly, T.J. Sell, Jackson Sell, and Josh Homa; sister Cheryl Brock, Kansas City, MO; nieces Christy Brock, Mandy Pike, Tracy Leslie; nephews Troy Leibbrand and Randy Sissick. He is also survived by other family members.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, stepdad, Myron McWilliams, brother, Jim Leibbrand, and sister-in-law, Rita Leibbrand.

Memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 20, 2016 at Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage. Fr. Ted Estes will officiate. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Nashville Cemetery, Nashville, MO. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Steve Leibbrand Fund at Hometown Bank, 312 W. Central, Carthage, MO 64836.
