JoNell Lawyer

Mrs. JoNell Lawyer, 74, of Jane, Missouri, departed this life on Tuesday, August 23, 2016, in the comfort of her home after a recent decline in health.

JoNell entered this life on April 28, 1942, in Hornersville, Missouri, daughter of the late Charles and Audry McKee. She was raised and attended high school and college in California. While in California, she owned and operated her own beauty salon. On November 11, 1974, she was united in marriage to Harold Eugene Lawyer and together they shared thirty-eight years before his passing on August 7, 2013. They moved to Jane, Missouri, in 1983, and for several years Jonell was employed by Sam’s Club, retiring in 2001. After retirement she became a partner in the Jane Store for four years. She served as Secretary for the Village of Jane and was President of the Jane Public Water Department. She was instrumental with numerous improvements to the water quality in Jane. She enjoyed hard work, fishing, cooking and baking. She also competed in the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, winning a silver metal in shot-put. JoNell was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold Lawyer; a son, Tony DeMartini; and a grandson, Anthony DeMartini.

JoNell is survived by one son, Steve DeMartini of Jackson, Califronia; a daughter, Lori Griffith and husband, Scott, of Jane, Missouri; two daughters-in-law, Barbara DeMartini of Folsom, California and Geneva Hanson and husband, Richard, of Anderson, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Tammy, Paul, Joseph, and Marlo DeMartini, Jeff Garrett, Cassie Ball, Heather Maze, Michael Griffith and Katie McKibben; eight great grandchildren, David, Sean, Megan, Zachery, Joseph Jr., Della, Deena and Madison; thirteen great-great grandchildren; her best-friend, Joyce Marrs of Jane, Missouri; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lawyer are 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 26, 2016, at Emmanuel Baptist Church near Jane, Missouri, with Bro. Jim Day officiating. Burial will follow in the Jane Cemetery. Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are David Garrett, Zachery Garrett, Jeff Garrett, Michael Griffith and Paul DeMartini. Sean Garrett, Joseph DeMartini, Bill Anderson and Tucker Ellis will be serving as honorary pallbearers. Memorials are being directed to the Emmanuel Baptist Church and contributions may be left at the funeral home.
