The heroic life of Shirley Ann (McNeel) Lambert, 77, of Shreveport, Louisiana, ended peacefully August 5th at her home after an almost two-year-long struggle with surgeries, injuries, and illnesses.
Shirley was preceded in death by her father James S. "Irish" McNeel, and her mother Syble (Dean) McNeel of Shreveport. She is survived by her husband Chuck Lambert of Shreveport, her brother Patrick S. McNeel of Marshall, Texas; daughter Elizabeth Lambert-Clark of Joplin, Missouri; son James Austen Lambert of Bossier City, Louisiana; two grandsons John Austin and Joshua Dean Lambert of Bossier City; four granddaughters Morgan Elizabeth Clark, Courtney Paige Clark, Olivia Lauren Clark of Joplin, and Audrey Leeann Lambert of Bossier City. Also surviving are one nephew John Allan McNeel of Vilania, Arkansas; one niece Shirley Dean McNeel of Marshall, Texas; one grandnephew Matthew Allan McNeel; and one grandniece Taylor Jean McNeel of Vilania.
Shirley's life and career stand as a salient monument to just how much a handicapped person can accomplish through a life dedicated to God and Jesus Christ.
Shirley graduated from Fair Park High School of Shreveport and earned her BS in education from Northwestern Louisiana State University, Nachitoches, Louisiana. She did post-graduate work at the University of North Carolina and Centenary College of Shreveport, earning her master's degree plus 30 hours in guidance counseling. Toward the latter part of her 43-year career, Shirley earned a certification as an administrator in Louisiana Schools. She taught biology and sciences in Caddo, Bossier and Avoyelles Parishes and in Walzenberg, Colorado. She served as guidance counselor at Bossier High School and Lamar High School in Lamar, Missouri. Shirley was principal of a local private school for one year, but her love for teaching, the students and the classroom lured her back to public education as she finished up her career teaching biology at Haughton High School in Bossier Parish.
Following her final retirement from education, Shirley served as a volunteer at Christus Schumpert Grace Home and as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA volunteer) at Volunteers for Youth Justice in Shreveport.
Visitation will be Saturday morning, August 13, 2016, from 9:30 – 10:45 in the parlor of Broadmoor Baptist Church, 4110 Youree Drive, followed by a memorial service celebrating Shirley's life and her move on to a better place in the sanctuary of the church at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the assistance funds of the Bethel and Deborah Sunday School classes at the church, classes in which she taught, participated, and loved.
