Donald Maurice Houpt, born January 29, 1933, passed away January 5, in his home surrounded by his family. Don had suffered through years of illness with COPD and emphysema.
Born in Goodman, MO, Don lived in many areas on the west coast before settling in Joplin. He married Carolyn Jayne LeMasters on May 7, 1954 and she survives.
Mr. Houpt lost his right arm when he was 17 in a laundromat accident but later mastered car mechanic skills and repaired vehicles for over 40 years with just his one arm. Don had many loyal customers who followed him wherever he was employed just to have him work on their cars.
Don and Carolyn had seven children; Sabrina Reidland (Tom) of Dallas, TX, Donna Houpt of Joplin, Valerie Houpt of Spring Hill, KS, Don Houpt (Reine) of Reston, Virginia, Stephanie Gregory (Ralph) of Carterville, Karen Landes (Roger) of Oronogo, and Kevin Houpt of Joplin. Don is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Don is also survived by three brothers; Leo, Donzil and Bill Houpt, and a sister, Beverly Caywood.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Life Church, 2965 South Chapel Road in Carthage, MO, Thursday, January 8, 1014 at 6:30 p.m. Pastor Curtis Walsh will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Life Church Building Fund at the above address.
