Vern E. Brown, 93, a long-time resident of Carthage, Missouri, died in his sleep at the Missouri Veteran’s Home in Mount Vernon on Sunday, January 4, 2015. He had been a resident of the Veteran’s Home since 2012.
Born to Opal and James Brown on October 24, 1921 in Joplin, MO, he is predeceased by his brother James (JT) Brown. Vern was wed to childhood friend Jacquelyn Rollins on July 12, 1962 in Carthage. A graduate of Carthage Senior High School in 1939, he then attended the University of Missouri until enlisting in the US Army Air Corp where he was promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant and served as a navigator from 1942 to 1944.
In high school, he was Captain of the Carthage Tigers football team and a star running back. He was a four year letterman in football and basketball for the Tigers. He was the Battalion Commander of the JROTC unit at Carthage High School. He was President of his high school class for his sophomore, junior and senior years. Vern worked for Nabisco for most of his adult life, predominantly in Carthage and Perrysburg, Ohio, where he retired in 1984. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carthage and the Grace United Methodist Church in Ohio. Vern served as the President of Carthage School Board for many years.
Surviving family include wife Jackie currently of St. Luke’s Nursing Home in Carthage; sons Mark and his wife Sarah of Miamisburg, Ohio; David and wife Jessica of Novato, California; and Patrick and wife Lee of Carthage, Missouri; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, mentor and guide to his family.
Services will be at Knell Funeral Home in Carthage on Friday January 9, 2015 at 10AM. Rev. James Lee of the First United Methodist Church of Carthage will officiate. Inurnment will follow at Park Cemetery, Carthage. Memorial donations may be made in Vern’s honor to the Alzheimer Association in care of Knell Mortuary of Carthage.
