Richard S. "Rick" Nordell, age 67, Reeds, Missouri, went home on Monday, January 12, 2015 at Mercy Hospital, Joplin after a sudden illness.
Rick was born February 19, 1947 in Oakland, California, son of the late Edward Nordell and Kay Sledge Nordell. He graduated from Culver High School, Culver City, California, and then Cerro Coso Community College in Ridgecrest, California with a degree in engineering and drafting. He served in the United States Navy, and then worked as an engineer at the Naval Ordinance Test Station in China Lake, California.
After a family vacation to Missouri, he loved the area so much that he moved his family to Carthage in 1974. He was a truck driver for many years working for several outfits in the area including Leggett & Platt, and Steadley. He also worked at the Wilson's Creek National Battle Field in Republic, Missouri as a grounds keeper. Rick retired from Bailey's Quarry in Reeds in 2010.
He was always a family man first, and loved spending time with his kids and grandkids.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Lewis Nordell, whom he married August 10, 1968 in California; a son, Richard "Rich" Nordell and wife Sandy of Reeds; a daughter, Deena Smith and husband Brian of Carthage; grandchildren, Devon Nordell, Dylan Smith, Ally Nordell, Tiffany DeVillers, Dustin Smith, and Colton Smith; great-grandson, Cannon Smith; brother, Gary Nordell of New Mexico; sister, Melissa Nordell of California, and a brother-in-law, Jerry Lewis of California.
Graveside services will be Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Dudman Springs Cemetery , Reeds, Missouri, with Mike Morgan officiating.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
