Lena A. Utter, Rocky Comfort, MO, departed this life on January 29, 2015, at the home of her daughter in Kansas City, MO at the age of 99.
Lena was born Dec. 9, 1915 in Adams, Minnesota, to Louis and Angelina (Ferro) Gucene. She graduated from Rocky Comfort High School in 1936. Lena was a good athlete and in jewelry box was a metal found that read, ‘first place discus’ and dated, 1936. On September 27, 1937, Lena was united in marriage to Claude Utter in Southwest City, MO and he preceded her in death on July 31, 1980. In 1974, Claude and Lena received the Farm Management Recognition County Award presented by the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City and the University of Missouri Extension Division for excellence in planned development in farming and family living. In 1975, they received the State Achievement Award from McDonald County for their Farm Management Program, again presented by the Chamber of Commerce of Great Kansas City and the University of Missouri.
Mrs. Utter was a member of the Bethlehem Free Will Baptist Church. She learned how to work at a very young age. Lena was a wonderful homemaker, a good wife and a great Mother. She could look at a picture of a garment, cut the pattern out of newspaper and sew the garment. Her wool hooked rugs and quilts were a work of art. Lena loved the outdoors and gardening was a joy to her and she loved to share her vegetables. At 94, Lena was still mowing her yard on her John Deere rider. Lena taught herself to be skilled in so many different endeavors during her life, an amazing woman of many talents. January, 2009, Lena could no longer live alone and began spending half of the month with her daughter in Kansas City and they then traveled to Rocky Comfort and spent half of the month on the family farm.
Mrs. Utter is survived by a daughter, Shirley Grout of Kansas City, MO; daughter in law, Linda Utter; two grandchildren, Lori Pestinger and husband, Jeff; Brian Utter and wife, Becky; four great grandchildren, Stella and Ellie Pestinger and Jacob and Jordan Utter, all of Bixby, OK; one brother, Joe Gucene and one sister, Rosella Linder of Wichita, KS. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by a son, Ray Utter and friend and care-giver, Tad Kamitakahara.
