Jack Vavra

Jack Richard Vavra, age 92, Joplin, passed away at 4:30 a.m. Friday, January 02, 2015 at Mercy Hospital after a short illness.

Jack was born May 20, 1922 in Caldwell, Kansas to the late Adolph Vavra and Pearl Adams-Vavra and had lived in the Joplin area most of his life.

He worked for Santa Fe Trail Transportation for 27 years, retiring as a clerk in 1980. Spending time with his family and friends was first and foremost. He enjoyed watching family sporting events, but was partial to MSSU Track and the St. Louis Cardinals. Jack was a regular mall walker and made many lifelong friends over the years. He enjoyed fishing; gardening and playing cards with his card group. He was a faithful member of Park Plaza Christian Church and was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II.

Jack married Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Phillips on April 15, 1954 in Joplin. She survives at the home.

Additional survivors include a son, Mark Vavra and his wife, Sheila, Galena, Kansas; two daughters, Patty Vavra, Joplin, Sara Bond and her husband, James, Webb City; one sister, Ruth Lawson, Joplin; three grandchildren, Brock Vavra, Nicholas Bond, Matthew Bond; and several extended family members.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by siblings, Sybil Buechline, Lena Tibbits and William D. ‘Bill’ Vavra.

Our family would like to thank each of you, friends and loved ones, for the joy you gave Jack, and the thoughtfulness and prayers you have shared during this time of our loss. We are grateful for all of you!
