Marie Powell, age 96, of Webb City, Mo. entered the Kingdom of Heaven at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at Spring River Christian Village in Joplin surrounded by her family. Marie was born February 7, 1918 in Darwin, Oklahoma, the daughter of John W. Sullivan and Miriah Addaline Baker. She attended High School in Atoka, Oklahoma and played on the girl’s basketball team.
Marie married Robert E. Powell, Sr. on December 24, 1936 in Darwin, Oklahoma. They moved to Webb City in 1949 and she began working at the Big Smith Shirt Factory in Webb City, retiring in 1978. She was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Webb City for over 60 years.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband on August 25, 1976. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters. Survivors include four sons, Robert “Bob” Powell, and John Powell and wife Carole, all of Joplin, Mo. and Spencer Powell and wife Margie and David Powell, all of Webb City; one sister, June Johnson, Seminole, Ok.; 12 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Webb City with Rev. Kyle Beverlin officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Hope Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dan Weaver, Dan Hathcock, Doug Ritchie, Jerry Fisher, George Garrison, and Jack Dawson. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Thursday at the Hedge-Lewis Chapel.
Marie served as a witness for the Lord her entire life. She loved the Lord with all her heart and all her soul and continued to be patient and wait upon him in her final days. Memorial contributions in honor of her service to the Lord are requested to the Emmanuel Baptist Church.
