John Washington McCoy, 96, born 3 December 1918, at Ozark, MO, son of the late William Thomas McCoy and Samantha Elizabeth Stoner McCoy. He was a lifelong resident of Joplin, MO, and lately of Kemp, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 74 years, Bernice McCoy, one brother William Marion McCoy, and three sisters, Annie McCoy, Alta Moshier, and Lennie Tanner.
He is survived by son Roger (Linda) of Clarksville, TN, son Phil Greg (Linda) of Kemp, TX, grandson Shannon of Clarksville, TN, grandson Brian Kerry (Tamara) of Decatur, TN, granddaughter Cathleen Verkler (Chris) of Clarksville, TN, and three great grandchildren, Blake, Rachel, and Gracie, of Decatur, TN.
Mr. McCoy was a retired Teamster truck driver, and a member and Deacon of Faith Baptist Church of Joplin. Mr. McCoy served with the United States Marine Corps and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in the battle of Iwo Jima.
Funeral services will be Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Bruce Allen officiating. Interment will follow in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery with sons and nephews serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
