Betty “Jean” Bishop, age 96, of Stella, Missouri, passed away Monday, November 25, 2019 at McDonald County Living Center in Anderson, Missouri.
She was born February 28, 1923 in Decatur, Nebraska the daughter of Frank and Gertrude Irene (Elliott) Carter.
In 1941 she married Charles Newton who died in 1943, during World War II. She later married Gordon Erlewine and to this union two children were born. Gordon also preceded her in death. In June, 1971 she married Vernon Bishop, who preceded her in death in August, 1999. Others preceding her in death were her parents and a brother, Gerald Carter.
Surviving are one son, Stephen Erlewine and his wife Peggy of Atlanta, Texas; one daughter, Diana Mitchell and her husband Jim of Noel, Missouri; one sister, Phyllis Cowan of Texas; five grandchildren, Michael Mitchell, Marsha Foster, Michelle Fichtner, Shawn Erlewine and Chris Erlewine; nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Jean grew up and received her education in Decatur, Nebraska where she graduated from high school. After high school she attended a trade school. She resided in Iowa for a while and in April, 1961 she moved to Missouri, working at Cardwell Memorial Hospital in Stella remaining there until November, 1978. From 1978 until December, 1988 she worked as a medical records technician at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.
She was a member of Body Of Christ Church in Wheaton, Missouri, where services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, November 30, 2019 under direction of McQueen Funeral Home in Wheaton. Burial will be at Macedonia Cemetery in Stella.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 P.M. until service time Saturday at the church.
