On Wednesday, November 13, 2019, Rick Taconis, father of three, passed away after a long battle with cancer at the age of 67.
Richard LeRay Taconis was born on October 15, 1952 in Topeka, Kansas to Richard and Donna (Horsley) Taconis.
When Rick was a junior in high school, his family moved from Liberal, Kansas to Quapaw, Oklahoma where he graduated from in 1970. From there, he attended NEO A&M College for a short time and then joined the National Guard.
In 1971, he married Kimberly Burggraf and started working for Burggraf Tire in Lebanon, Tennessee, Quapaw, and Joplin. The union of this marriage produced two daughters whom he coached many summers of softball. He was also instrumental in building the girl’s softball field there in Quapaw.
One thing he was extremely proud of was the Blue Thunder Kansas State Championship Team he helped coach. He remained in contact with many of those former players. Rick was also active in the Quapaw Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years.
In 1993, Rick married Tracy Weston Myers in Las Vegas, Nevada. During this time, he also owned Rick’s Tire and Auto in Joplin, Missouri. This union resulted in the birth of one son whom he loved to fish with whenever he could.
He is survived by his two daughters, Kami Butterfield and husband Wayne, Blythe ”Weezer” Weaver and husband Robert, and one son Weston Taconis, all of Baxter Springs, Kansas. Papa Rick left behind six grandkids, Kyler and Kallie Cook, of Pittsburg, Kansas and Jackson, Bella, Layla and Luke Weaver, of Baxter Springs, Kansas. Rick also leaves behind his ex wife Tracy Taconis, Baxter Springs, and her daughters Alison Brinkley and Adrian Dunn.
He leaves behind a sister, Linda Taconis and her husband, Bob Bohm, of Satellite Beach, Florida. Also leaves behind an aunt and uncle, Karen and Dale Cline, from Boonville, Missouri.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Donna Taconis, his beloved aunt Beth Hiller, and his first wife Kimberly Taconis.
Rick leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews, and very close friends.
If you knew Rick very well you knew he loved KU Basketball and OU Football. He also loved watching and attending the Women’s College World Series every year. His most favorite things in the whole world were fishing and Busch Light Beer. Back in the day, Rick and his buddy Bobby Judd were lovingly known as Roland Martin and Jimmy Houston.
During these past couple of years when the cancer slowed him down a bit, he loved cleaning the pool, playing solitaire on the iPad, and going fishing with Wayne and Weston. At home, you could always find him watching the fishing network.
Memorial Services will be held at Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel on Sunday afternoon, November 17, 2019. Visitation will be from 2-3 with a service to follow. Pastor Tracy Rowe will officiate.
