Edna Jean Hinnant was born November 21, 1926 to Caro and William B. Hinnant near Pikeville, North Carolina in Wayne County. Jean had three brothers and two sisters-all are deceased except for a sister-in-law living in Goldsboro, North Carolina. She attended Nahunta grade school and Pikeville High School.
Following graduation, Jean and her sister, Letha, went to Washington D.C. and acquired jobs with the Civil Service. She had a job as a clerk typist in the Finance Department, a branch of the Pentagon, typing checks for shipping war supplies for the Railroad Company. That was the first time she used an electric typewriter.
After a few months, she returned home to attend Carolina Beauty College in Raleigh, North Carolina. She became a licensed beautician working in Goldsboro, North Carolina.
Jeanie met her future husband, Francis E. Phillips, while in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was from Cincinnati, Ohio and was stationed in the United States Army at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. They were married after he returned home from service in World War II.
They had six children. They lived in several states during their married life and later retired in Joplin, Missouri in 1985.
A homemaker, she and her husband were happily married for over 67 years. He preceded her in death on August 16, 2013. Jean continued to live at College View Manor and enjoyed her friends and staff until her death.
Jean was a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1969, where she was active with the Sarah Circle group. Jean was a member of the Woman's Club at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club and the former Welcome Club of Joplin.
Jean enjoyed visiting and having fun with her children; eleven grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren. She loved church; her Lord; photos; living in College View Manor; reading; recipes; all kinds of music; playing cards with friends and life in general.
Jean is survived by Gale and Linda Yarrow of Montgomery, Texas, Tom and Mary Shrum of Huntsville, Arkansas, Craig and Peggy Noble of St. Louis, Missouri, Janet Shambro and friend, Gary Swift of Granite City, Illinois, Brian and Lauren Phillips of Tuxedo, New York, Jonny and Sandra Patterson of Fredericktown, Missouri; eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
She was proud of all in her family and loved them dearly.
Services are planned for Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Parker Mortuary. Interment will follow at Osborne Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until service time at the Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Preschool Program, in care of Parker Mortuary.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
