J. C. Hounschell

John Charles (J.C.) Hounschell, age 87, of Joplin, Missouri passed away on June 10, 2021 after a long and loving life. 

He was born August 14, 1933 to Manville and Orpha (Hart) Hounschell. He was born and raised on the family farm near Stark City, Missouri and graduated from Midway High School. Following high school, J.C. attended the University of Missouri in Columbia where he earned his Bachelors and Masters degree in Sanitary Science. 








 J.C. married M. Loraine Crabtree on August 15, 1954 in Stark City, Missouri. The couple had four children. He spent the majority of his career in the field of public health, first working for the USDA in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Dallas, Texas, and then moved to Munster, Texas where he worked in the lab of a milk plant. Following that, he worked for the State Department of Health, first in Sedalia, Missouri, then in Jefferson City, Missouri. 

In 1965, he became the Director of Public Health for the city of Joplin where he worked for thirty years, retiring in 1995. 

Following retirement, J.C. and Loraine enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and to several countries. J.C. was truly a man of God. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, worshiping for over 50 years at the Spring City Church of Christ where he had served as an elder in the church for many years before his health declined. He had a true love for Jesus and enjoyed sharing the gospel. 

J.C. is survived by his wife of 66 years, Loraine of the home; four children, John Hounschell, II and wife, Linda of Melbourne, FL; Jim Hounschell and wife, Kim of Joplin; Judy Crandall and husband, Ron of Joplin and Jeannie Bassett and husband, Kenny of Columbia, Missouri; eleven grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren and a brother, Don Hounschell and wife, Bobby of Stark City.
