John Powell

John Woody Powell passed away October 3, 2021. John was born January 27, 1940 in Phoenix, Arizona. His parents were Robert Eugene Powell and Eunice Marie (Sullivan) Powell now deceased. John was the second son of four sons. His brothers were Robert E. Powell, Jr (Deceased), Spencer Dale Powell and David Earl Powell of Webb City, Missouri.

John was preceded in death by the love of his life Carole Elizabeth (Kelley) Powell. They married on March 19, 1960 in Joplin, Missouri. This marriage produced two daughters Melinda Jean Dhar of Joplin and Cynthia Lee (Daniel) Weaver of Racine, Missouri. John had three grand children, Jacob J. Dhar (Emily) of Carl Junction, Missouri, Christina Dhar of Joplin and James Weaver of Racine. He also had three great grand children, Caden, Addison, and Claire.








John graduated from Webb City High School in 1958. He was co-captain of the football team, President of the “W” Club and President of the Student Council, first semester. He went to Joplin Junior College for two years on a football scholarship and graduated in 1960. John continued his education, part time, at Kansas State College of Pittsburg. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration in January 1965. John was the Chief Fiscal Officer for Raye and Company Transport in Carthage, Missouri, Freeman Hospital, Southwestern Sash and Door Company and Ozark Center of Joplin, Missouri. John retired from Ozark Center in January 1995. While employed at Freeman Hospital he was elected twice as President of the Show-Me of Missouri Chapter of the Hospital Financial Management Association.

At the age of 17 John joined the Missouri National Guard in Webb City, Missouri. John said “If you are going to be in something you might as well be something.” John went on active duty at Fort Benning Georgia for Officer Candidate School in 1961 and graduated to become a 2nd lieutenant. John advanced through the ranks over the years. In 1975 John went on active duty at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas for four and a half months to attend The Command and General Staff College. John later switched over to the United States Army Reserve and was an instructor for eight years. He then went to inactive reserve and retired as a Lt. Colonel in January 2000.

John has opted for cremation and he now rests peacefully in his niche at Osborne Memorial Cemetery with Carole.

Memorial Services will be held Friday, October 8, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Joe Morris officiating.

The family has requested memorial contributions to be made out to Lafayette House in lieu of flowers.
