Wilmetta Sternes

Wilmetta Sternes age 100 of Galena, KS., passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at her home following a sudden illness.

Wilmetta was born on October 22, 1921 in Galena, Kansas, the daughter of Samuel and Lilly (Carey) LaTurner. She has been a life-long area resident. Wilmetta worked as a waitress at Reed’s CafĂ© before becoming a Tax Assessor. She was a member of the VFW, holding all local offices before being elected as the state president. She enjoyed gardening and going fishing whenever she could.








She married Ray Calvin Means, he preceded her in death in 1960. She later married Kenneth Sternes in 1967, he preceded Wilmetta on September 3, 2010. Wilmetta was also preceded by her parents, her son, Dale Means, and by six sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include her son; Don Means and wife Vicki of Galena, KS., two daughters; Carol Kennedy of Galena, and Linda Henderson of Joplin, MO., seven grandchildren; Rob, Deanna, Christopher, Michelle, Erin, Russell and Cheryl, several great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 1, 2021 at the Mason-Woodard Chapel. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Galena, KS.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.
