Claire Hallock

(From Parker Mortuary)

Claire Riley Hallock, age 88, Joplin, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2021 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Claire was born January 27, 1933 in Seward, Nebraska, daughter of the late Hubert and Leila (Moyer) Riley. She grew up in Nebraska and received her degree in Pharmacology from the University of Nebraska in 1955. She was one of the first women to receive this degree and was a pioneer for women in this field.

She married Robert “Bob” Hallock on November 28, 1952, and shortly after he served in the United States Air Force, stationed in Montgomery, Alabama. After his service they moved to Chicago for a couple of years before moving to Mullen, Nebraska where they opened a Rexall Drug Store which they ran until 1962.

They then moved to Lafayette, California where she continued her career with Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Walnut Creek, California for over 25 years before retiring as Chief Pharmacist. She was one of the first female Chief Pharmacists in the United States.

While in Lafayette she raised her two children and was very involved with their activities from 4-H to all their sporting activities. After her retirement from Kaiser Permanente Hospital they then spent some time in Webster, Wisconsin and then moved to Tennessee for five years before moving to Joplin in 1997 where Bob retired.

Claire continued working with several Pharmacies in this area including Mayes Drug, Dillon's Pharmacy, Kroger Pharmacy, and the Medicine Shoppe. She enjoyed working and serving others for over 50 years as a pharmacist and did so until she was 79 years old.

Even through all the years of working, she was still active in many voluntary positions. She was a member of the 4-H, NRA, Red Hat Society, Republican Party, SMB Lifestyles, Tri-State Iris Society, Mercy Auxiliary, and Freeman Auxiliary and Advantage Travel Club. She also donated blood regularly throughout her lifetime because her blood type was used to help premature babies.

She loved to stay active with her children camping, fishing, swimming, gardening, and giving out tons of advice to help in their lives.

After retirement she enjoyed playing cards with her Bunco group, attending her Surviving Spouses group, her exercise class, and playing cards with the Card Ladies. Claire was also an avid University of Nebraska Cornhusker fan to the end. She believed that life was worth the living, and she sure did that! She was one of the nicest people you will ever meet, with her infectious smile, and she was always dressed to impress. She was spontaneous, and always ready for the next adventure. She was wise and giving, very independent, and a successful businesswoman who enjoyed mentoring younger people in career, marriage, family, and friendship. Her Christian faith was always a driving force in her life. She lived life to the fullest and will be missed by all that knew her or got advice from her, whether that was a business or social encounter.

In addition to her parents, Claire was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Bob Hallock, who passed away on November 3, 2001; a granddaughter, Holly Hallock; sisters, infant Riley, and Mary Riley; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Hughes.

Survivors include her son, Paul Hallock and wife Deborah of Tulsa, Oklahoma; daughter, Pam Hanamoto and husband Fred of Lafayette, California; grandchildren, Jennifer Rosen (Peter) of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Robert “Bobby” Neu (Nicole) of Yucca Valley, California, Heather Andrew (Stewart) of Tulsa; great-grandchildren, Halle, Cooper, Kenzie, Fletcher, and Levi Brielle; brother, Tom Riley (JoLee) of Prineville, Oregon; sister, Twila Hughes of Parker, Colorado; niece Lynn Strickland (Tom) of Englewood, Colorado; nephews, Kurt Hughes (Angie) of Parker, Colorado, and Garr Hughes (Tracy) of Elizabeth, Colorado.

A memorial service will be Saturday, November 6, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at Osborne Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Alan McCamey officiating. Inurnment of her ashes will follow in Osborne Memorial Cemetery next to Bob.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, 101 N. Rangeline Road, Joplin, MO 64801.
