(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)Karolyn Kay Cleveland, passed away in her home on April 1 after an extended illness; she was 83 years old.
Karolyn was born March 18, 1939, as Caroline Kay Balma, the daughter of
Argentine (Biancarelli) and Barney Balma, in Frontenac, KS. Growing up in Frontenac among a village of Italian immigrants, her mother Argentine ran a popular restaurant for some 40 years in the Frontenac area.
She met her husband Billy Gail Cleveland (who passed in 1991) while he was attending Kansas State Teacher’s College in Pittsburg and working at her mother’s restaurant. They married August 27, 1957 in Olathe, KS.
Both Karolyn and Bill Cleveland worked as public school teachers at Carl Junction, MO school district, he in Biology and Chemistry and she in Art. After receiving her Bachelor of Art Education from Missouri Southern State College, she began teaching at Carl Junction and later received a Masters of Art from Pittsburg State University. A popular and inspiring teacher, she cultivated the artistic interests of a generation of students, teaching at C.J. for 25 years while continuing to work on collaborative art projects at MSSC and pursue her own interests in painting (Watercolor), and pottery.
She is survived by her children Cynthia Gail Harrold and her husband Donald, and Kyle Lewis Cleveland and his wife Kyoko. Her family includes grandchildren Ryan Harrold, and Cassandra Cook and her husband Ronald, and their children Sutton Cook and Elliana Cook.
Karolyn was a lively, charismatic person, with a keen curiosity, always committed to learning and as an avid reader, imagining worlds outside her experience. She was a bundle of energy, who was easy to laugh with a great sense of humor. She continued to paint and work on artistic projects late into her life. A gracious and generous person, she loved to eat and as the child of an Italian restauranteur, was eager to cook for and entertain others. She was a loving Matriarch to her family, taking pride in her children and joy in her grandchildren, and provided unending support and love to her friends. She was admired by all.
A funeral service has been scheduled for 11:00 pm on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, at Mason-Woodard Mortuary. Burial will follow at Carl Junction Cemetery. The family will receive friends for at visitation at 10:30 am prior to service.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mason-Woodard Mortuary.
