Floyd R. Steele, Jr., age 91 of Joplin, Mo. passed away on Friday, December 30, 2016 at his home.
Floyd was born on November 18, 1925, in Joplin. The son of Floyd, Sr. and Mary Alice (Cavener) Steele. He moved with his family to Baxter Springs, Ks., where he graduated from Baxter Springs High School. He married Kathryn Lawhorn and to this union a son, Michael, was born. Floyd served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the U.S.S. Hornet CV12 and later worked in Baxter Springs for the U.S. Postal Service for over 25 years. Serving as Post Master over 12 years. He was an active member of First Christian Church in Baxter Springs. Floyd served as a member of the Baxter Springs Volunteer Fire Department for over 42 years and was a charter member of the Keenagers. He later married Gerry Lantz in 2005 and joined College Heights Christian Church. Floyd loved his God, his family, his country and music was a big part of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Kathryn, son, Mike, brother, Bob, sister, Norma Kimbrough and step-son, Jon Lantz. Survivors include his wife, Gerry, brother, Don and wife Nancy, grandchildren, Brian and wife Jennifer, Brandon and wife Jennifer, Betsy Hedden and husband Spencer; daughter-in-law, Martha Steele, sister-in-law, Carol Sue Abuchon, 3 step-children, Jeff Lantz, Charlene Lantz, Judy Weaver; 8 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
The family would like to thank Hospice Compassus, Home Instead and special nephew, Aaron Storrs. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to Hospice Compassus or God’s Resort in care of the mortuary.
Memorial services have been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 5, 2017 at College Heights Christian Church. Rick Bushnell, Minister, will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.
