Ruth Elizabeth Nixon Nethery, age 96, Joplin, passed away on Monday, December 26, 2016 at Joplin Health and Rehabilitation after a lengthy illness.
Ruth was born August 22, 1920 in Carthage, Missouri, daughter of the late Virgil Nixon and Vivian Gregg Nixon. She graduated from Joplin High School, and was the Fall Festival Queen of Joplin. She moved to California during World War II to live with her husband while he served. She worked as a dental assistant while there, and later worked as a Library Assistant here in Joplin where she worked at the old library prior to helping move and set up at the current location. She was an active member of Byers Avenue United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday School Teacher, was on the board, and served on many committees. She worked for over thirty years as an election judge and volunteered as a poll worker during that time. She was also active with other volunteer work in the community such as the Joplin Historical Society where she served on the Board, Area Community Concert board member, and volunteered with the Spiva Art Center.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Nethery who died in 1980; two brothers, William Nixon and Keyton Nixon; sister, Vivian Nixon.
Survivors include her children, David Nethery and Annette Nethery both of Joplin; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be Thursday, December 29, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in Parker Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Bob Dart officiating. Interment will follow in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until service time.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer Association.
