Bink Brown

(From Adams Funeral Home)

Verle “Bink” H. Brown was born on June 14, 1937 in Melrose Park, Illinois (on a park bench). He passed peacefully on March 31, 2022, in the presence of his family.

He earned his nickname, Bink, from his sister Verlita, “Lita,” after Binky the Bear. He attended grade school there and moved to Bridgeport, Nebraska, with his parents and sister in the winter of 1949 in the midst of a blizzard.

Bink worked alongside his parents at the Western Auto store they established in Bridgeport. During high school, he served a year as class president and attended Boys’ State in Lincoln, Nebraska, as well as developed some lifelong friendships. In 1955, he graduated from Bridgeport High School and then attended the University of Nebraska Lincoln and Chadron State College. He then volunteered for the draft in 1957 and served 18 months in Korea.

Bink married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Linda Kay Houk July 27, 1958, and they were married for 63 blissful years. They moved to Arnold, Nebraska, and farmed for three years. In 1961, they moved to Bridgeport and farmed there for three more years before buying the Western Auto and eventually franchising it as Ace Hardware.

During those 34 years, Bink served in the Jaycees and the community, coached and sponsored legion baseball, and played in the Friday night men’s league at the famous Court House and Jail Rock Golf Course where he had the fastest golf cart on the course.

Bink and Linda started their family on the farm in 1960 in Arnold with Kay Arleen, and Dina Lin came shortly after in 1961. Lee Brian (Linda) showed up in 1964 as a result of poor family planning. Kay went home to be with the Lord in 1969. Then in 1971, Karin Adel (Dustin Miller) came along, and because Bink and Linda didn’t want to raise her as a seemingly only child, Susan Marie (Jason Sorgenfrei) was born in 1973. This productive union resulted in 10 grandchildren who adored him: Kaeli Linea, Ross Colin, Carlene Cathryn, Taylor Lynn, Kobi Scott, Mikayla Marie, Mikenzie Kathleen, Melynn Kay, ThomasJay, and Ellie Brianne.

After 36 years in Bridgeport, Bink and Linda moved to Ozark, Missouri, where Bink worked for 20 years for enjoyment interacting with all kinds of people at the Chateau on the Lake in Branson, Missouri. He retired at the age of 80 and enjoyed playing basketball, working in his yard and garden, and being with his family.

Bink knew Jesus as his Lord and Savior and is now at home with Him. Those he loved who went before him include his father, Verle Abner Brown, his mother Verona Emma Brown, and his daughter Kay Arleen Brown. Those he loved who are still living include his sister Lita, his wife Linda, his children and grandchildren.
