Charles Franklin Sweet, age 78, passed away at 3:00 am, Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Barnes Jewish Hospital St Louis MO following an illness.
Charlie was born March 1, 1940 in Joplin, MO. His parents were Charles B and Fern L. (Lammers) Sweet. He had lived in Galena all of his life.
He graduated from Galena High School with the class of 1958. Soon afterwards he entered the U S Navy and served our country until 1962. He then worked several years at Vickers Manufacturing in Joplin. He retired from the City of Galena Water Department in 2002.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Galena, KS. He enjoyed rebuilding and repairing cars. He even built a few stock cars. He and his wife also rebuilt and flipped houses in Galena. His greatest joy was babysitting his great-grandson, Riot Sweet Perry.
He married his high school sweetheart, Betty Rose Stansberry on July 25, 1958 in Miami, OK. She survives.
Additional survivors include one son, Chuck Sweet, Galena; one daughter, Linda McClintock (husband, Mike), Carterville, MO; one brother, Kenny Sweet, Galena, one sister, Phyllis Brown, Daphne, AL; 5 grandchildren, Jacob Perry, Braxton Perry, C. J. Sweet, Brady McClintock, and Stephen Hudson; and one great-grandson, Riot Sweet Perry. He was also survived by two special girls, Debbie Wade and Connie Smith, and a host of other family members, including many who claimed him as their grandpa.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Friday, April 20, 2018 at First Baptist Church. Pastor Jeff Swart and Pastor Paul Mooney will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena, KS.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:00 pm, Thursday, April 19, 2018 at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church in care of the funeral home.
