John C. Atteberry, age 78, Joplin, passed away Monday, April 16, 2018 at Joplin Gardens Healthcare Facility. He was born on June 19, 1939 in Joplin, the son of Clarence Ollie Atteberry and Lucile Hazel Starliper Atteberry.
He married Joyce Elliff on August 19, 1961 at First Baptist Church, Joplin. The couple moved to Southern California that same year where John first worked as a chemist at U.S. Borax and later as a structural steel estimator for Central Industrial Steel. The family moved back to Joplin in 1978 where John began his own business, JACO Mannequins. He was very active at First Baptist as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, choir member, and sponsor for many youth and music trips. In retirement, John excelled in his artistic talents. He was a proficient painter, wood-worker, and created many stained-glass projects.
John is preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Tommy Ray Atteberry.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Atteberry, Joplin; one daughter, Julie Ruhling (Michael) of Rochester, NY; one son, John Atteberry, Jr. (Gina) of Joplin; six grandsons, Alexander Ruhling (Courtney), Tysons Corner, VA; Christian Atteberry, Joplin; Peter Ruhling and Nicholas Ruhling, both of Rochester, NY; Kelsey Atteberry and Kip Atteberry, both of Joplin; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Homer and Sallye Miller; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services for family and friends will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. in Osborne Cemetery with Dr. Duane Trimble, officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Senior Adult Ministry, First Baptist Church, 4128 Connecticut Avenue, Joplin, MO 64804.
