(From Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home)
Dick Perkins, age 67, of Joplin, Missouri passed away Friday, April 20, 2018 following a recent cancer diagnosis.
He was born December 11, 1950 in Joplin, Missouri to Harry and Letitia (nee Boyd) Perkins. From a very early age, he expressed a true love of sports, both playing and watching. He graduated from Carthage High School in 1968 and served with the 203rd Engineer Battalion of the Missouri National Guard.
From a young age, Dick started working in the grocery business. It was while he was working at Consumers when he was 18, wearing his wingtip shoes and pegged plaid pants, when he met his future wife, Kathy Furry. They were married on June 9th, 1972.
While employed at Consumers, he worked his way up to the position of regional Vice President. When Consumers closed its doors, Dick went to work for AWG (Associated Wholesale Grocers) until he retired as a district manager.
Dick was a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan, an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan, and for his son Mike and brother Chuck, was tolerant of the Royals. He enjoyed mowing his lawn on his John Deere mower, fishing, eating popcorn and ice cream, playing with his grandkids, and spending time with his cat Ruffles and his dog Jethro. He also spent a lot of time on vacation adventures with his wife, children, and extended family. To Dick, the answer to every trivia question was “F. Scott Fitzgerald” and he enjoyed misquoting the opening of the Canterbury Tales.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Tish, and his mother-in-law Cherry Furry, and his beloved nephew, B.J. Scofield. He is survived by wife Kathy of the home; one son, Mike Perkins and wife Jennifer residing in Springfield, Missouri; one daughter, Holly McGrath and husband Kevin residing in Joplin, Missouri; one step-daughter, Vicki Jurica and husband John living in Grandview, Missouri. He was a beloved “Big Dad” to his seven grandchildren: Dylan McFarland, Brian, Madison, Mason, Cali, Taylor, and Morgan Perkins. He is also survived by three step grandchildren, Cole, Blue, and Jack Jurica; two brothers, John Perkins and wife Betty of Monett, Missouri, and Chuck Perkins and wife Karen of Carthage, Missouri, as well as a host of extended family and friends.
Memorial visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Monday at the Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home in Webb City, Missouri.
