Albert Eugene Hoerman, age 88, of Lamar, peacefully passed away early Tuesday morning, April 17, 2018, surrounded by family at his home.
Gene was born November 2, 1929, in Otterville, Missouri, to T.M. Hoerman and Hazel Gray. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, proudly serving his country from 1947 through 1953 in Korea, Germany, and Japan and was awarded the Army Occupation Medal (Japan), United Nations and Korean Service Medals, and Good Conduct Medal. Patriotic throughout his life, Gene served in the National Guard, was a 50-year member of American Legion Post 209, and participated in countless military funeral honors as an active member of VFW Post 3691.
On December 30, 1960, at the Oakton Methodist Church, Gene married Hazel Humphrey and they made their home and raised their three daughters in Lamar. Working at Lawn Boy until the plant was moved to Illinois in 1963, Gene became one of the first hired when O’Sullivan Industries opened in 1964. After retiring in 1991, he had more time to spend what he considered perfect days with his family at the farm, being outdoors working in his garden and yard, or tinkering with his Model A. He was an avid collector with a wide variety of interests. Gene was a member of Oakton United Methodist Church where he especially enjoyed the fellowship of the Golden Agers.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bob Hoerman; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joan and John Monroe; and two grandchildren.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 57 years, Hazel; daughters, Brenda (Deron) Curtis, Excelsior Springs, Teresa (Dennis) Lair and Terri (Wayne) Harrison, all of Lamar; a brother, Herb (Carol) Hoerman, Carl Junction; a brother-in-law, Bud (Donna) Humphrey, Miami, Oklahoma; and a sister, Donna Hoerman, Webb City. He delighted in his role as “Poppy” to five grandchildren, Jennifer (Tilden) Harper, Devon Curtis, Justin Lair & Jerrica, Ryan Lair & Katie, Cory Harrison & Chelsey, and great-grandchildren, Holden, Carson & Jocelyn, Izaiah, Payton, Chloe & Clayton, Elijah & Maci.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 20th at Daniel Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery with full military honors conducted by Lamar VFW Post 3691.
