Doris L. Flaker of Joplin died Sunday, April 15, 2018 at Mercy Hospital after a brief illness. She was 90.
Doris Lucille Walter was born August 16, 1927 in Mindenmines, Mo., to Murt and Mary Maurine (France) Walter. She graduated from Mindenmines High School in 1945, and briefly attended Kansas State Teachers College of Pittsburg. She married Delbert Ray Flaker on July 5, 1947, in Pittsburg. He preceded her in death in 1999. The couple lived in Pittsburg until moving to Carthage, Mo., in 1960, then moved to Joplin in 1971.
Doris is survived by a daughter, Carol Flaker Simpson of Redondo Beach, Cal.; a son, Gerald Flaker, of Carthage; three granddaughters, Kori Flaker Sands of Columbia, Mo., Kate Simpson of Springfield, Va., and Alexis Simpson Cavish of Rosemead, Ca.; and four great-grandsons. A son, Michael Wayne Flaker, died in 1992, and a grandson, Russel Sloan Flaker, died in 2006. A sister, Floella Walter James, died in 1976.
Doris was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and kept statistics on each Cardinal game. She enjoyed her weekly outings to the luncheons at the Joplin Association for the Blind and met many wonderful friends there.
In keeping with her wishes, no viewing or funeral services are planned. Burial will be in Oak Park Cemetery, Carthage. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Joplin Association for the Blind (JAB).
