Etta Roberta (Barker) Hobbs passed peacefully from this life on April 24, 2018. She was surrounded by the love of her life, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Roberta’s love of God, Chester Hobbs, and family was central to her life. She was passionate, strong-willed, and served as a foundation for her entire family. Known as Grandma to many, Roberta was known for her beautiful quilts, flowers, abundant gardens, rich home cooking, and the best sweet tea on earth. She was a longtime faithful member of the Moss Bible Church.
Roberta’s story began on September 12, 1929 in the lush hills of Anderson, Missouri. She was the second born child of William and Lena Barker. She and her siblings shared many wonderful memories living in rural Anderson, where they attended Moss Schoolhouse. It was at this one-room schoolhouse that she met and fell in love with Chester Hobbs. The story of Chester and Roberta is one of life-long love and devotion, which has been a source of inspiration to their four children, 11 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren.
Roberta was a certified public school teacher at age 17, and taught school at Lone Star School. She also served as bookkeeper for Crowder College for many years. She impacted many lives through her role as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent. She reflected God’s love to everyone she met, and was known for her heartfelt prayers for her family, friends, and neighbors.
Roberta is preceded in death by her parents, William and Lena Barker; sister Sarah Jane (Barker) Penn and brother Donald Barker.
Survivors include husband of sixty-eight years, Chester Hobbs of the home; children John and Donna Hobbs of Anderson, Tim and Barb Hobbs of Anderson, Linda Mullin of Anderson, and Galen and Barbara Manning of Southwest City; four granddaughters, Amanda Marney, Charity Keith, Amy Wallain and Megan Hare; seven grandsons, Justin Hobbs, Joshua Manning, Aaron Mullin, Jake Hobbs, Ethan Hobbs, Andy Mullin and Cody Hobbs; twenty-five great grandchildren; three brothers, Kenneth Barker of Anderson, Ted Barker of Anderson and Ned Barker of Greenwood, Missouri; as well as a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hobbs are 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 27, 2018 in the Anderson Chapel of the Ozark Funeral Homes with Bro. Bob Holloway officiating. Burial will follow in the Anderson Cemetery with her seven grandsons serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 5-7:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
