(From Ulmer Funeral Home)Ruth M. Coffey, 80, of Carthage, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at Mercy Hospital in Carthage. Ruth was born on September 26, 1942, in Carthage to Alvin Spurgeon and Martha “Russow” Spurgeon. She was a lifetime resident of Carthage and worked at Schreiber Foods for 34 years. During high school she was a part of the ROTC Marching Band. Later, she was a member of the Kendricktown Women’s Club, an avid reader, enjoyed bowling, gardening, painting, and loved to go horseback riding.
Ruth was united in marriage to George Coffey on December 6, 2002, in Miami, Oklahoma; he preceded her in death on September 23, 2022.
Survivors include three sons, Mark Phillips (Marsha), Ron Phillips (Virginia) and Jim Phillips; one daughter, Brenda Wentjen; one brother Tom Spurgeon; two sisters, Wanda Bisner, and Louise Kitchen; four grandchildren, Justin, Michael, Tyler, and Michael; and four great-grandchildren, Bella, Peter, Jason, and April.
She was preceded in death by her husband George Coffey; parents Alvin and Martha Spurgeon; one brother Kenneth Spurgeon; and grandson Jason (2013).
A service will be held for Ruth at 2:00 PM on Monday, February 6, 2023, at Ulmer Funeral Home in Carthage, Missouri. A visitation will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 PM prior to the service on Monday, February 6, 2023, at Ulmer Funeral Home. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Carthage, immediately following the service.
