Alta Baldwin

Alta Marie Baldwin, 95, of Sarcoxie, Mo departed this life on Monday, July 11, 2016 at her residence.

Alta was born on December 14, 1920 in Richland Center, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Leo and Frances Christine (Damon) Meade. She was a 1939 graduate of Beloit High School, Beloit, Wisconsin. After graduation she completed one year at Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois. On July 16, 1949 she was united in marriage to Allen J. Baldwin in Beloit, WI and together they shared thirty years until his passing on June 10, 1979.

She began her work career in 1939 and worked continually for the next forty years before retiring in 1979. Alta’s forty-year work span consisted of various jobs. In her early careers, she worked in the dietary department for Beloit Hospital, Fairbanks Morris making coils and copper wiring, she worked as a nanny caring for children, she worked for a company that produced grinding wheels, she worked as a bookkeeper for a women’s retail store, she was employed by Montgomery Ward in Beloit and she later managed the office in Racine, Wisconsin. For two years of her life, she worked for the Electric Motor Cooperation in Racine as a telephone operator and receptionist. In January 1950, she moved to Bremerton, Washington, and worked in the office of Olberg Drug Store. In 1952, she worked for CPA Sam Berch as his office manager and she also did accounting and tax preparation. In 1952 he sold the business to Darrel Mickels and she continued her duties. For several years, she worked as the office manager and bookkeeper for Miche King Ambulance Service, he also owned a wrecking yard service, a taxi cab service and also a gas station in Bremerton, Washington. In 1973, she moved to Alameda County Fairgrounds in Livermore, California, and during this period of time, she managed a trailer court and handled horse barn stall rentals; this facility boarded race horses that competed at Golden Gate and Bay Meadows. After Alta and Bud retired, they enjoyed traveling in Wisconsin and they later made Sarcoxie their home, where she spent her last two years of work on the production line for Juvenile Shoes.

In 1982, she started volunteer work as a Grey Lady, McCune-Brooks Hospital, Carthage, MO. Red Cross Representative for Sarcoxie, and was instrumental in getting blood drives started at Sarcoxie High School. She taught knitting and crocheting classes in her home and was always willing to help anyone plus shared her patterns. She belonged to many organizations, including American Quilters Association; National Quilting Association; Ozark Piecemakers Quilt Guild of Springfield; Ozark County Quilters of Cassville; Town and County Quilt Guild of Joplin; Mercy Prestige; Rhonda Fairchild Chapter of NSDAR, twenty-year member; Disabled Americans Veterans Auxiliary; VFW Auxiliary #492, Silverdale, WA; life member, 50 plus years; American Legions Auxiliary Department of MO, 50 plus years; Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary #192, Bremerton, WA, 62 year member; National Association of Federal Employees MO Chapter #19, life member; Good Sams Club, Englewood, CO., fifty years; Round Prairie Extension Club of Sarcoxie, MO. Completed the yarn council of America course of Master Teacher of Crocheting and Knitting thru the Jasper County Extension Service, MO. She freely taught many old and young people over the years. She was a member of the Sarcoxie Church of the Nazarene (New Beginnings Church of the Nazarene) serving in past years as church secretary and board member. She attended Senior Adult (Primetimers) retreats in the Joplin District Church of Nazarene every year from 1987-2014. She attended Carthage First Church of the Nazarene and B.A.S.I.C. Sunday School Class, Carthage, MO. She started Prayer Shawl Ministry at Carthage First Church of Nazarene from 2007-2010. Rev and Mrs. Joe Lee Tompkins asked Alta to assist and she was in charge of the construction of the retirement quilt for Joplin District Superintendent Church of the Nazarene, Rev. Pal and Jan Wright, along with several others, she did most of the hand quilting. Quilt blocks were submitted by each church on the district, plus corner blocks were decided by Alta, when completed it made a king size quilt.

She is preceded in death by one step son, Raymond Baldwin; two brothers and their wives, Cloren and Jean Meade and Byron and Gwen Meade; and one sister, Kathleen Meade.

Alta is survived by her daughter, Donna Baldwin, of the home; two step-daughters, Helen Nickels and Arlene Scott; numerous step grand, great and great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services for Alta are 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2016 in the chapel of Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home, Sarcoxie, MO with Reverend Jim Dillow officiating. Burial to follow in Sarcoxie Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions have been directed to the Potter’s House of Springfield, MO in care of the funeral home.
