Helen Faye Lawrence Shafer, age 96, Joplin, passed away at 2:42 p.m. Sunday, July 24, 2016 at her home after an illness.
Helen was born October 29, 1919 in Baxter Springs, Kansas to the late Walter Lawrence and Ruby Reynolds Lawrence and had lived in the area all of her life.
A graduate of Baxter Springs High School in 1937, she attended Joplin Business College and worked at LaBarge Electronics for 30 years as an executive secretary, retiring in 1987. Helen enjoyed reading; was a former Ladies of the Elk's and was a faithful member of St. James United Methodist Church.
She married Roland Shafer on March 27, 1949. He preceded her in death on December 29, 1989.
Helen was also preceded in death by siblings: Geneva Cassell, Clifford Lawrence, Gerald Lawrence, Robert Lawrence and best friends, Betty and Elmer Wiles.
Survivors include several nieces; nephews, and friends who loved her deeply.
Graveside services are planned for Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Stone Cemetery. Tommy Freeman will officiate. Pallbearers will be Mike Lawrence, Matt Ouren, Trevyn Couch and John Webb. Memorial contributions may be made to Avalon Hospice or to the Joplin Humane Society.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Candy Brown and Peggy Webb for all their years of kindness. Also to her caregivers, Robin Edwards, Lucy Springer, Carol Sweeten, Sharon Feagan and Sue Brockmeyer for all their devotion.
