Irene Hamm

(From Knell Mortuary)

Irene E. Hamm, 95, passed away on Monday evening, July 25, 2016 at Freeman West, Joplin, MO. She had been a resident at Sunnyhills Residential Care in Carthage, MO since May of 2006. Irene was born to Benjamin F. Gillum and Daisy (Zuck) Gillum on August 23, 1920. She graduated from Jasper High School, Class of 1938. Irene married Grover Hamm on November 7, 1938 in Carthage, MO; he preceded her in death in 2004. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters.

Irene was a homemaker and helped her husband on their rural Sarcoxie farm most of their married life. Upon retiring they moved to Sarcoxie where they were active members of the First Methodist Church, the Mr. and Mrs. Sunday School Class, and choir.

They enjoyed golfing and playing pinochle with friends, but Irene’s big joy was quilting; and she won many a blue ribbon for her quilts. Her nieces and nephews treasure the beautiful quilts she made for them. Irene will mostly be remembered for her always happy smile and joyful disposition, in spite of her circumstances in the latter years of her life.

Graveside memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m., Saturday, August 6, 2016 at Park Cemetery, Carthage. Minister James Yost of First United Methodist Church Sarcoxie will officiate. Online condolences may be expressed through www.knellmortuary.com. Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of Knell Mortuary.
