Sylvina M. May, 94, of Kansas City, MO, passed away peacefully at 12:45 p.m. on Friday, July 22, 2016 at New Mark Care Center in Kansas City. Sylvina was born August 28, 1921 in Scammon, KS to the late Fernando and Mary Henning Munoz. She relocated to Kansas City in 2011 from Joplin, MO, which had been her home since 1968. After many years as a homemaker, Sylvina worked as a secretary for the former Memorial High School and then as a Joplin-area real estate agent before retiring in 2000. She was a member of Forest Park Baptist Church.
Sylvina married James H. May on June 20, 1942 in Wichita, KS. He preceded her in death on May 12, 1991.
Survivors include her children: James M. May, Minot, ND; Rebekah Hayes, Kansas City, MO and former husband Carl Hayes, Baxter Springs, KS; and Deborah Cunningham and her husband Patrick of Springfield, MO; a sister, Deanie Moore of Columbus, KS; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Sylvina was preceded in death by her brothers, Joe and Frank Munoz, and a sister, Bea Cowan.
Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday July 29, 2016, at the Mason-Woodard Chapel with Dr. Tim Sumners officiating. Burial will follow at the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Injured Marine Family Support Assistance Program in care of Semper Fi Fund, 825 College Blvd, Suite 102, PMB 609, Oceanside, CA 92057. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary and Crematory of Joplin, MO.
