Bill Stogsdill

William “Bill” Franklin Stogsdill, age 84 of Joplin, Mo passed away Friday December 2, 2016 at the John Knox Village House in Lee’s Summit, Mo. 

He was born on November 9, 1932 in Joplin, Mo the son of Walter Stogsdill and Oleta “Little Heart” Nesbitt Wheatley. Bill earned his Doctorate in education. He married Phyllis Asbell on February 14, 1950 in Benton County, Ar. Bill was a veteran serving his country during the Korean War with the United States Army, earning a Combat Infantry Badge, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Bill then Joined the Navy and was stationed on the USS Coral Sea with tours in Japan and South Vietnam and on the USS Enterprise in South Vietnam, earning three Good Conduct Medals, a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam War Service Medal, Naval Unit Commendation, Naval Air Crew Wings and Presidential Unit Citation for service in Korea. After retiring from the Navy, Bill spent several years in the education field as a teacher, principal and district superintendent. Bill was Native American who truly embraced his Native American Heritage. 

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and a son Bill Stogsdill. Survivors include his wife Phyllis of the home, four children: Rebecca Westley and Husband Ed, Ken Stogsdill and wife Colleen, Carol Sinclair and husband Sam, and Marianne Sherman and husband Mike; eleven grandchildren: Bevin Stogsdill, Nathan Stogsdill, Vanessa Balek, Allison Warner, Ryan Sinclair, Michael Stogsdill, Kena Stogsdill, Sarah Adkins, Justin Sherman, Matt Sherman and Tyler Sherman; and nine great grandchildren. 

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Friday December 9, 2016 at the Forest Park Baptist Church Joplin, MO. A graveside service with full Military Honors will be held at 2:00 pm Friday at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield, Mo, with Pastor John Swadley officiating. The family suggests contributions to the Soldiers Bible Ministry in care of the mortuary.
