Shirley Hemphill

Shirley Louise Hemphill, age 85 of rural Columbus, passed away at her home on Saturday, December 3, 2016.

Shirley was born on November 3, 1931 in Tucson, AZ to the union of Homer Goodrich and Yapp (Bertie) Goodrich. She graduated from Columbus High School with the Class of 1949.

Shirley had worked at Eagle Picher in Data Processing, but spent most of her adult life as a housewife, caring for the home and for her children. She enjoyed reading and writing, and was a member of the Center Christian Church.

She was united in marriage with Earl D. Hemphill on October 21, 1951 in Commerce, OK. He survives.

Additional survivors include one son, Steven Hemphill of Columbus; one daughter, Janiece Hemphill of Carl Junction, MO; two brothers, John Goodrich of Joplin, MO, and Bob Goodrich of Miami, OK; three grandchildren, Christopher Hughes (wife, Moriah) of Joplin, Cole Hughes (wife, Traci) of Carl Junction, and Nathan Mangile (wife, Kim) of Tahlequah, OK; and seven great-grandchildren, Bo Hughes, Taylor Hughes, Ethan Hughes, Morgan Hughes, Lydia Schroder, and Jeffrey Schroeder, and Alexander Mangile.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Mark Allen Hemphill Sr.; an infant sister, Sara Goodrich, and one granddaughter, Audrey Hughes.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at Center Christian Church. 3150 SW Center Road, Columbus, KS. Pastor Mike Jones will officiate. Visitation will take place at the church one hour before the service, beginning at 9:30 AM. Following the service, Shirley will be taken for cremation under the care of Derfelt’s Baxter Chapel.
