Caryl MacMorran

Caryl Belle MacMorran, 93, passed away peacefully in her sleep April 2, 2018 in Carthage. Caryl was born June 24, 1924 in Chicago, IL to Robert T. and Helen McClelland. She graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, IL. She attended DePauw University in Greencastle, IN and later studied art at what is now Missouri Southern State University.

Caryl was united in marriage to Robert D. MacMorran on March 30, 1944 in Chicago; he preceded her in death in 1977. Together they raised five children, Wendy Fugate (Russell) of Joplin, Lynne Cooksey (Mel) of Coventryville, PA, Bill MacMorran (Donna) of Carthage, Jim MacMorran of St. Louis and Doug MacMorran (deceased) (Pam) of Troy, IL.

The family moved to Carthage, Missouri in 1961 from Glenview, Illinois. Throughout Caryl’s 57 years in this area, she was involved in numerous community activities. She became one of the first organizers of the original Carthage Historic Preservation. Caryl was also a past president and board member of Spiva Center for the Arts in Joplin. She was on the Carthage Planning and Zoning Commission and was very active with the MSSU International Piano Competition. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and the Carthage Devotees Music Club.

Caryl is survived by seven grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Carthage from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 28th, followed by a private burial.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Carthage Humane Society.
