Don Ramon Hughes, age 85, Joplin, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Landmark Hospital in Joplin.
Don was born July 27, 1928 in Joplin, son of the late Edgar Hughes and Ethel Gustus Hughes. He graduated from Joplin High School, and then earned a Masters Degree from Pittsburg State University. He was a professor at Northeastern Oklahoma College in Miami, Oklahoma, was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church of Webb City.
Don worked for Missouri Gas Service Company for over 42 years. Don served in the Naval Reserves for 27 years, and was a member of the Army National Guard for 10 years.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by a daughter, Lou Anne Herron, a son, Donald “Skip” Hughes, a step-son, Eric Michael Hutching, his brother, Max Hughes, and a son-in-law, David Kersey.
Survivors include his wife, Hellen Burge Hughes, whom he married May 27, 1978; step-daughters, Marcy Diane Kersey of Independence, Kansas, Shelly Gail Wahr of Joplin; sister, Patricia Beard of Joplin; grandchildren, Sarah Gayle Morrison and husband Shannon of Kansas City, Kansas, Paul David Kersey of Burlingame, California, Evan Francis Wahr of Joplin, Brady Mikell Hutching and wife Erin, Sean Dean Hutching, Natasha Dominique Zermeno and husband Emmanuel all of Columbus, Kansas, and Christopher Daniels and wife Tiffaney of Bentonville, Arkansas; six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Monday, July 14, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in the Parker Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Kyle Beverlin officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Park Cemetery with family serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Sunday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association in care of Parker Mortuary.
